Colin Farrell Body
How our Colin got Arnie's muscles There aren't many mere mortals who'd take on Arnold Schwarzenegger, but recent pictures of a beefed up Colin Farrell show he's fighting fit and up for the challenge. The 36-year-old reformed bad boy is set to reprise Arnie's iconic role, playing factory worker Douglas Quaid in a remake of the 1990 sci-fi hit Total Recall.
Admittedly, even with his new and improved physique, no one is going to mistake the 5ft 11ins Dubliner for the 6ft 2ins former Governor of California, and ex pro-bodybuilder, Schwarzenegger. But there's no denying Farrell's made an impressive transformation with a makeover that goes more than skin deep. Instead of charging at the role with quick-fix wacky diets of eggs or weird workouts, the dad of two opted for a sensible, slow-and-steady approach using a healthy diet and exercise to produce lasting results.
He told Total Film magazine: "I've spent enough time in the last 10 or 12 years messing around with diets for films. I know a little bit about nutrition. "I watched what I ate and made sure I got 150g of protein every day, and worked out fairly hard." 'Fairly hard' is perhaps putting it mildly. Preparation for the role started in December 2010 when he told reporters: "I've got this hairy Croatian boxing coach who tortures me every day because I need big muscles for a movie.
He's killing me with his drills." He also kicked a lifelong smoking habit (after writing a letter of farewell to his filter-tipped friends) and joined a gym, after previously joking the only weightlifting he'd ever do was raising a can of beer. In Toronto while filming Total Recall he worked closely with a trainer, building lean muscle mass, something he's kept up if photos of him regularly stepping out of the gym in Philadelphia, where he's been shooting Dead Man Down, are anything to go by.
Then there's the fat-burning spin classes he's started as well as a new-found passion for yoga -- great for toning and strengthening. During Total Recall he was spotted entering a 'Restorative by Candelight' yoga class and in his April TV interview with Ellen DeGeneres he revealed: "I started yoga about a year ago, I even bought a mat ... I love it.
I find it such fun, it's great to feel in touch with your body." It might not produce any 'Get Colin's Total Recall body in six weeks!' workout videos, but his measured approach is a far cry from his Hollywood hothead days. In 2004, the hard-drinking wildchild reportedly had to have his workouts specially tailored to fit in with his hectic lifestyle while beefing up for Alexander.
Back then, gym-phobic Farrell was put on a punishing, but short-term schedule by coach, and retired marine, Captain Dale Dye, of running, push-ups, squats and arm curls, that enabled him to build up 30lb of muscle weight in a relatively short space of time. But the actor's current, more balanced approach to exercise and physical wellbeing seems to echo where Farrell is emotionally in his life right now. Over the years his weight has fluctuated as frequently as the rollercoaster of peaks and troughs in his professional and private life.
After he made his somewhat weedy debut on Ballykissangel, we've watched the Castleknock man swell to superstar status. But by his role in 2005's Miami Vice talk was more about his puffy appearance, developing 'beer boobs' and reported €8m salary than his acting. After ditching booze, following a stint in rehab in December 2005, he found sober life could bring unexpected weight challenges, explaining: "When I was in Belgium filming In Bruges I had to find other things to do than drink.
"I just ate chocolate all the time and got really into it. There's nowhere better to buy chocolate than there." In 2008 we saw him shrink by 40lb, reportedly thanks to a diet of tuna, black coffee and diet coke, to play a frighteningly thin war photographer in the largely forgettable film Triage. But after having been too fat and too thin, a box-office hit (and miss), Farrell seems to have hit upon his Goldilocks moment and found a balance that is just right.
The €150m Total Recall, directed by Len Wiseman, is generating a good buzz, with critics predicting it could be one of the summer's big box-office winners. After years of running headlong into back-to-back filming projects, Farrell is making more measured, and better, decisions, about which parts he takes and also allowing himself more time to dedicate to his number one role: being a dad.
In interviews, he lights up at the mention of his two sons, two-and-a-half-year-old Henry from his relationship with Ondine co-star Alicja Bachleda-Curus and James (8) whose mother is US model Kim Bordenave. He says his sons keep him grounded by being largely unimpressed with their dad's fame. "They've been on film sets and they don't really care," he laughed in a recent interview.
"If I had moveable limbs and a wing span that popped out and a glass bubble head and my name was Buzz, they'd be over the moon -- but I don't." But after squandering his money during his hard-partying days, Farrell says he's now putting it to better use, setting up a big screen for film nights for friends and family in his LA pad and splashing out on a home sauna.
Having around €21m in the bank also helps him pay for treatment for his eldest son, who suffers from the rare genetic disorder Angelman Syndrome, which affects his speech and mobility. Farrell says: "Less and less do I see his condition. I'm just keenly aware of his personality. He's really cool. He's so much fun to be around. "I'm just crazy to be around him.
His health is good, we have the seizures under control and he's got an amazing team of people in his life." After years of chasing every female from Britney to Dame Eileen Atkins, there's no woman in Farrell's life at the moment, and he recently told gay talk show host DeGeneres, who is also a personal friend, that she was the closest thing he had to a girlfriend. But now he's shaped up, one would suspect that he won't be single for too long.
