What you need to know - Iran has warned it will resume hostilities as Israel attacked Lebanon, killing at least 182 people - Israel said its battle against Lebanon-based Hezbollah was not part of the ceasefire with Iran - Iran has listed three US violations of the ceasefire agreement Welcome to DW's coverage of the US-Israel war with Iran and the wider conflicts in the Middle East on Thursday, April 9: Iranian delegation to visit Pakistan for peace talks with US A delegation from Iran will arrive in Pakistan's capital Islamabad on Thursday night for negotiations with the US, Iran's ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam said.
"Despite skepticism of Iranian public opinion due to repeated ceasefire violations by Israeli regime to sabotage the diplomatic initiative, invited by Hon. PM Shehbaz Sharif, Iranian delegation arrives tonight in Islamabad for serious talks based on 10 points proposed by Iran," he said in a post on X. Troops will remain deployed near Iran until 'real agreement’ is reached: Trump US President Donald Trump said that US troops deployed near Iran would remain stationed in the area until a "real agreement" is reached. "All U.S.
Ships, Aircraft, and Military Personnel, with additional Ammunition, Weaponry, and anything else that is appropriate and necessary for the lethal prosecution and destruction of an already substantially degraded Enemy, will remain in place in, and around, Iran, until such time as the REAL AGREEMENT reached is fully complied with," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. While he said a deal falling apart was "highly unlikely," Trump threatened to respond with "bigger, and better, and stronger" strikes if an agreement was not reached.
"In the meantime, our great Military is Loading Up and Resting, looking forward, actually, to its next Conquest. AMERICA IS BACK!" Trump wrote. Iran suggests alternative routes, citing risk of mines in Hormuz Strait Iranian news agencies published a map on Thursday suggesting the country’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard installed sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz during the war. The reports came from the ISNA news agency and Tasnim, which is believed to be close to the Guard.
The map showed a large circle marked "danger zone" in Farsi over the Traffic Separation Scheme, which was the shipping route in the strait. That was where the Guard allegedly put the mines. Iran announced alternative routes for ships travelling through the strait. The map suggested that ships travel up north in waters closer to Iran’s mainland near Larak Island, which is the route some ships were observed taking during the war. The dates on the map ran from Feb. 28 until Thursday, April 9.
It’s unclear if the Guard had cleared its alleged mining in the route. It is also unclear if Tehran is letting vessels pass through the strait, following reports on Wednesday suggesting it was shut, something the White House called "completely unacceptable." UN Chief warns Israel's strikes on Lebanon pose 'grave risk' to ceasefire The UN secretary-general on Wednesday cautioned that the deadly attacks by Israel in Lebanon posed a "grave risk" to the fragile US-Iran truce, his spokesperson said in a statement.
"The ongoing military activity in Lebanon poses a grave risk to the ceasefire and the efforts toward a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region. The Secretary-General reiterates his call to all parties to immediately cease hostilities," UN chief Antonio Guterres's spokesman said. "The Secretary-General strongly condemns the loss of civilian lives and is deeply alarmed by the mounting toll on civilians," the UN spokesman said. "There is no military solution to the conflict.
The Secretary-General continues to call on all sides to avail themselves of diplomatic channels," he added Hezbollah fires at Israel over 'violation' of ceasefire Hezbollah said on Thursday that it fired rockets at Israel in response to continued attacks despite the US-Iran ceasefire. The Iran-backed militant group said it launched "a rocket barrage" at the kibbutz of Manara in northern Israel "in response to the enemy's violation of the ceasefire agreement." Iran has said the ceasefire should apply to Lebanon, citing statements from Pakistan, which mediated the truce.
But the US and Israel have claimed that the deal does not apply to Lebanon, and Israel has continued its attacks. At least 182 people were killed in a major wave of Israeli strikes on Lebanon on Wednesday, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. Iran closes Strait of Hormuz after briefly opening it Iran agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as part of the agreed ceasefire deal with the US; however, it reportedly closed it again, citing violations by the US and Israel.
The Strait of Hormuz remained shut to vessels sailing without a permit, and shippers said they needed more clarity before resuming transit through the narrow strait. Tehran had agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz on the condition that the vessels pay a toll, which would provide Iran with a new source of revenue. Iran threatens to end ceasefire as Israel attacks Lebanon Following Israeli strikes in Lebanon that killed at least 182 people and wounded some 900 others, Iran has threatened to resume hostilities.
The US, Israel and Iran are disputing the extension of the ceasefire deal to Lebanon. A senior US official has said Iran's 10-point plan was not the same set of conditions the White House had agreed to in order to pause the war. "If Iran wants to let this negotiation fall apart...over Lebanon, which has nothing to do with them, and which the United States never once said was part of the ceasefire, that's ultimately their choice," US Vice President JD Vance added.
Meanwhile, Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf appeared to threaten the ceasefire, posting on X that the "workable basis on which to negotiate" had already been violated, making further talks "unreasonable." Ghalibaf has listed three alleged US violations of the truce plan: the continued attacks in Lebanon, a drone entering Iranian airspace, and a denial of the country's right to enrichment. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned it would "fulfil our duty and deliver a response" if Israel did not cease its strikes.
The Hezbollah militant group said it had a "right" to respond to Israeli strikes. Welcome to our coverage The delicate two-week-long ceasefire between Iran and the US entered its second day while Israel continues to bombard Lebanon. World leaders welcomed the ceasefire and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran has closed the shipping route again following attacks on Lebanon. The US and Israel have asserted that the ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon. Iran, however, said the attacks by Israel in Lebanon violate the ceasefire agreement.
US Vice President JD Vance has said Iran's understanding of Lebanon's inclusion in the truce agreement was the result of a "misunderstanding." We will be bringing you the latest developments and more in these live updates. You can catch up with Wednesday's developments in the US-Israel war with Iran so far here.
